James Bord has won the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event and pocketed a staggering £830,401.
The Englishman defeated a tough final table at the Empire Casino in London's Leicester Square, including countryman Roland de Wolfe, to pick up the biggest prize in European poker.
After a tense final day, Bord was crowned when Italian online specialist Fabrizio Baldassari pushed in pre-flop with Queen-Eight. The local hero snap-called with Ace-King, which held to give him the biggest payday of his career.
Speaking after picking up his WSOP gold bracelet, Bord said: "I never thought I would win one.
"Being so close, you just never know when it’s going to come again. And it’s even more special to win it in my hometown. It’s just something very special.”
The little-known Englishman added: "I am a Mixed Games cash player. For the past four years, I have been playing high-low games.
"No-Limit Hold’em has moved on a lot. The players have got much better.
"I was a pretty awful tournament player but Sam (Trickett) being one of my best mates and being one of the best tournament players in all of England gave me some coaching over the last year and now the result is, I got a bracelet! I can’t complain. Thank you Sam!”
Asked if the victory would change his approach to poker, Bord added: "I will play in some more tournaments. But on a daily basis, cash games are my thing.
"I love the WSOPE. It’s a fantastic structure. It suits the cash game players.
"You’ve got a lot of play. There’s not that hope and shove like you see. You really get a lot of play.”
Bord beat a total of 346 players, including poker legend Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth, who had each paid £10,000 for the right just to sit down in the WSOPE Main Event.
The London Poker Festival now moves on to the Hilton Metropole, just a couple of miles away, where the European Poker Tour (EPT) London Main Event starts this afternoon.
