PETER EASTGATE sensationally quit poker today claiming he was “bored” by the game.

The 2008 World Series of Poker Champion, who won $9.15 million when he scooped his title, is taking an indefinite break and said he won't ever return unless he needs the money.

The 24-year-old said: “I was bored of the game, lacking motivation, did not need the money any more so saw no point in continuing.

“If I return, it will be because I need an income again or because I am bored doing nothing."

Eastgate said he has no immediate plans and isn't sure what he will do next.

The Dane, nicknamed Icegate, announced his decision through a statement issued by his sponsor, PokerStars.

In it, he said: "When I started playing poker for a living, it was never my goal to spend the rest of my life as a professional poker player.

“My goal was to become financially independent."

Eastgate beat 6,843 two years ago to become World Champion, breaking 11-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth's record as the youngest World Series of Poker champion ever.

Hellmuth, who won the main event in 1989 at age 24, said: "I think that Eastgate is smart. He's going to step away and figure out who he is, and I wouldn't be surprised if he came back a more confident, better person in four years.

“He seems like a levelheaded kid anyway."

Another poker legend, Annie Duke, added: "I think it's really impressive that somebody particularly as young as he his, particularly who is so very well defined in his life by poker and the championship that he won, is willing to say, 'Hey, you know what? I took some time off during this World Series and I realised I was happier.'"

Eastgate cashed once at the WSOP last year, finishing 78th at the Main Event winning $68,979.
